Dear all Kurisa Moya
friends,
It may already seem
like the long weekend in June was months ago , but we hope
you did get the opportunity to get away then to somewhere special
and recharge your batteries. The second half of the year
always seems to have a secret pact with time to speed things up in
some kind of crazy way. Here at Kurisa Moya, we have had a
great year of South African and international bookings
and have been busy with bird walks, massages, sunset drives and
cooking for them all. We have developed the new trail to the
stunning, enormous yellow-wood tree and now offer abseiling and
other adventure sports from Kurisa Moya, which is great fun.
Thora Boloka Stone Cottage is really enchanting people and the
Forest Lodge cabins are hugely popular as always. The
new en-suite bathrooms on the farmhouse turned out well and so
we have a lot more flexibility for guests and tour groups.
Another exciting
development is that David Letsoalo, local Birdlife SA guide in
Limpopo is now permanently based at Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge.
As you may know, David Letsoalo is a qualified Birdlife SA guide
with intimate knowledge of the Woodbush forest and adjoining area.
He has been guiding in the area for more than 2 years and has
"stakeouts" for most of the specials in the area like Cape
Parrot, Bat Hawk, Black-fronted Bush-shrike, Narina Trogon, Green
Twinspot, Orange Thrush and many more.
David offers guided walks on Kurisa Moya to the various habitats on the farm. Alternatively, he can guide birders to the local birding hot-spots like Woodbush forest, Turfloop Dam, the montane grassland habitats of the Blue Swallow, Polokwane Game Reserve and environs or down to the tropical lowveld of the Tzaneen area. Kurisa Moya guests enjoy greatly reduced rates for David's services. Apart from the great birding here, this year guests have also enjoyed the elephant-back rides, horse-back safaris, reflexology treatments and microlight flights available in the area.
Other news from the
area is that the young Modjadji Rain Queen died last week and
the new queen will only be revealed after the mourning period of 5
months. We hope that the drought that has been gripping the
area will respect the authority of the new queen and that it will
rain and rain! We have also had a wonderful trip down memory
lane with an 85 year old woman, Peta Fowler, now living in England.
Through an old friend, she received our brochure, turned to the page
with the Farmhouse and burst into tears... it is the house built for
her family in 1937 by her father, Maurice O'Donovan. She has
sent us some wonderful photos of the farmhouse as it was built.
The house was under thatch and all those gardens and terraces were
started by Peta's mother, Dorothy. The surrounding area looked
very different compared to today and we were amazed to see
grasslands instead of forest, as far as the eye could see. We
were enchanted by imagining the life Peta must have lead here as a
young girl and we have begged her to tell us the stories
of her youth here at Kurisa Moya's Farmhouse (then, Glendower)
Peta's family photos can be seen on Kurisa Moya's website on the
History page: http://www.krm.co.za/KurisaMoya/KurisaM.htm
Kurisa Moya is still
looking lovely and this winter has been wonderfully mild so far.
We would love to see you back at Kurisa Moya, so to tempt you, we
are offering a winter special of a 15% discount, (so R255.00 per
adult and R125.00 per child under 12). Remember, Farmhouse
guests also get a 10% discount if the group is 10 people or more.
Not enough of a reason to pack your bags? Remember that once
you are here, there is only a sunset drive, a bird walk or a
massage to distract you from the peace and tranquillity.
We hope to see you soon
and catch up with all your exciting news.
With best wishes,
Lisa, Ben, Jacque,
Baja, Ant, Sue, Johanna, Abel, Grace, Melide and David
