TRANQUIL TIME AT THORA BOLOKA

Thora Boloka Cottage is on the edge of a bushveld - grassland area overlooking the Kudu's River Valley.  This organic, earthy cottage is dramatically encircled by nature and is situated far away from the other venues so it is completely private and incredibly peaceful. You can see a million stars at night and hear jackal running down the road.  Thora Boloka is a tranquil, private venue with a spacious living area –  a lovely mix of stone and wood with ochre and terracotta walls, lizard-lights and African baskets.  A fireplace and candelabra set the atmosphere indoors while the patio, with a hammock for lazy summer days, has infinite, calming views. The open-plan living area is spacious and sociable and the kitchen is well kitted-out for family feasts. An outdoor shower overlooks the valley while an innovative indoor shower with wooden latte doors and handmade washbasins captures the organic atmosphere.

Thora Boloka is crafted with stone from the farm and painted the colour of the earth it stands on. Lintls are hewn from cedar trees knocked down in the 2000 floods and doorframes are twisted gumtree branches as they are in nature. The double volume living area is light and airy in summer but cosy with the central fireplace on winter days. The most incredible views call you to every window and the patio around the cottage draws you outside to marvel at the mountains all around. At night the distant lights of Magopane and Polokwane merge with the twinkling stars above. From the patio or outdoor braai area, you may see Vereaux’s Eagles, klipspringers or baboons on the koppie and hear bushbabies calling at night. Experience the charm of this beautiful, peaceful cottage.

There is a double bed downstairs and 4 single beds in the loft rooms upstairs so it is perfect for a couple or a family. There is a large patio and garden around the cottage, so it is great venue if you are visiting with dogs.  It is close to the indigenous forest and all the walks. Kurisa Moya is delightfully off-the-grid, but with all you need for a comfortable stay – solar lights; a gas stove and a fridge-freezer while hot water is from a solar or gas geezer.

Practicalities:

  • Thora Boloka sleeps between two and six in one double bed and 4 single beds in 2 loft rooms which are open to the lounge and dining-room below so these rooms are not entirely private.
  • This cottage is perfect for a couple or family with kids.
  • The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering but breakfast, lunch or dinner can be brought to your kitchen hot and ready to eat (book meals with our chef at least a week in advance).
  • Kurisa Moya is electricty-free, but you lack for nothing: there is a gas fridge and freezer, 4-plate stove, oven and hot-water geysers, as well as solar, candle and gas lighting.  Bring torches for bushbaby-spotting
  • The cottage is serviced daily and linen and towels are provided.
  • There is a weber-braai on the patio and a hand-crafted braai area in the garden with a complimentary basket of Black Wattle firewood supplied each day and bags of firewood for sale.  Bring charcoal for a hot coal.

Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge, Magoebaskloof

"After being in a world of rest and laziness for a whole week at Thora Boloka, none of us seemed to have had any inclination to switch on a computer or even touch a cellphone after our return to the suburbs of Pretoria. Therefore this slightly belated message... Thank you again for accommodating me, Jan, Amanda and my dog children at Thora Boloka. The long walks and the reading of stacks of books were (as always) the best therapy after a year with many challenges. We started this year with a smaller one: climbing the koppie with the dogs... the view was magnificent. And of course, the weather was more than fine."
